The Research Cluster Grant

The Silicon Mechanics Research Cluster Grant is a program designed to jumpstart research efforts where access to high-performance computing was previously limited, outdated or not available. Each year the awarded cluster drives collaboration within institutions through access to the latest high-performance and GPU technologies.

The HPC cluster will help students engage with real world applications that will ultimately help them integrate into the workforce, as well as allow graduate-level students to conduct research previously not possible. The areas of research the cluster will enhance or enable at Cal Poly are vast, from computational fluid dynamics to fire dynamics to deep visual learning and cyber security. It will also allow the university to collaborate with other universities in the California system on research projects.

Honors Circle


University of California Merced - Merced, CA
At the University of California, Merced, the HPC cluster will provide the university a variety of scientific research and training opportunities, including the capacity to train a diverse population of undergraduate and graduate students on a full set of computational skills needed to be competitive in the job market as independent researchers.

At the University of New Orleans, the HPC cluster will be used to build on the strengths of the medicinal chemistry, cyber security, advanced materials design, information assurance and computational biology programs featured at the university.

Utilization of the cluster spans a wide variety of research activities including bacterial statistical genetics, processing and analysis of RNA sequencing, phylogenetic trees, computational chemistry, engineering integrity, analyzing genomic sequencing data, population genetic data and more.

The application was submitted jointly by two interdisciplinary research teams which include scientists focusing on chemistry, mathematics, physics and biology, along with cancer and biomedical research.
