Home > Wave Vidmar - Ocean Row Solo

It's not just one man rowing across an ocean, it's hundreds or thousands of people rowing across an ocean. It's a cooperative effort, that helps push the boundaries and limits, giving real-life examples to others in what they too can possibly achieve.
Wave Vidmar
Expedition Update

Wave Vidmar has updated his schedule of upcoming rows. He currently plans the following expeditions:
  • May 1, 2012–Big Pacific Paddle (California to Hawaii, 60 days)
  • July 2012–Ocean Row Solo North Atlantic Challenge (Cape Cod to England, 60-140 days)
  • November 2012 - Ocean Row Solo Atlantic Challenge (Portugal to Caribbean, 60-120 days)
We will continue to follow his expeditions at siliconmechanics.com/ors.

More about Ocean Row Solo North Atlantic Challenge

Scheduled to leave from Cape Cod in July, Wave Vidmar will attempt to row across the North Atlantic Ocean, in his custom, high-tech, hand-made 24-foot ocean row boat. The north Atlantic West-to-East crossing is considered one of the most challenging of ocean rows.

Silicon Mechanics and Intel are proud to be Presenting Sponsors for Wave Vidmar and the Ocean Row Solo North Atlantic Challenge. We have worked together to provide a custom, high-performance workstation that will be serving mission control functions throughout the expedition.

This page is intended to help us keep his supporters at Silicon Mechanics and elsewhere in touch with his progress. There will be a regular flow of data coming in to the mission control server from the dozens of sensors that are accompanying Wave and his boat Liberty. As he submits information, photos, and video, we look forward to sharing much of this with you.

Expedition Science

Wave Vidmar is committed to using his expeditions to gather data on the ocean, his boat, and the physical and psychological effects of the challenge. He will have a host of sensors with him on the row. A partial list of the instruments on board includes
  • 2 G-Force sensors mounted in the boat
  • Professional weather station
  • Body monitors to record about 20 different body functions, including activity, calories burned, resting time, sleep time, and temperature
  • Rowing performance monitor to track strokes taken, power per arm for each stroke, duration of stroke, depth of stroke, catch, drive, recovery and speed
  • 7 GPS devices for real-time tracking
Silicon Mechanics will be maintaining a dashboard, updated as the information comes in, so that we can track on his progress throughout the voyage.

More about Liberty

Wave's custom ocean row boat Liberty is the most advanced, technologically equipped ocean row boat in the world: no others come close. His boat is a blend of modern materials and construction techniques, coupled with proven geometry and hull shapes. It has been optimized for the conditions of the North Atlantic, and can be easily used on other oceans.

Utilizing modern technologies, the boat is shaped and designed using 3D modeling programs. Computer programs enhance the design, and streamline the hull shape for maximum slip through the water. The boat was tested, using simulations, under extreme conditions long before it was ever constructed. Though it sounds complex, Liberty is simple in form and function, and will provide comfort and safety for Wave while he rows for up to five months across the raging North Atlantic Ocean.

Construction is of a kevlar/carbon fiber foamcore sandwich construction. The exterior is carbon fiber, with an inner skin of Kevlar. This will allow for an extremely strong and durable boat, with minimal weight. The key here is safety. With positive flotation added, the boat will be virtually unsinkable, even if it were to become severed. The boat is self-righting, meaning that if it were to be rolled it would return to its normal upright position. It also has additional steering to help with currents and wind.

Most systems are redundant on the boat to help ensure continuation of the row in the event of any problems. Over three years of research and planning has gone into the design of Wave's boat.

We invite you to return often for the up-to-date information about Wave Vidmar and the North Atlantic Challenge. The Ocean Row Solo website can be found at www.oceanrowsolo.com.
