Feature Benefit
Scalability Package • Multi-node virtualization which allows a group of SAN systems to act as a single unit
• Load-balancing / pooling allows for resource sharing between the storage from all SAN systems in the cluster
• Replication enables data to be split among all systems in a group in redundant and non-redundant configurations
Configurable Snapshot Package • Ability to automate process of scheduling volume snapshot copies (base software only offers manual snapshot capability)
• Allows dynamic snapshot sizing to capture only incremental changes between snapshots to optimize disk utilization
Remote Data Protection Package • Asynchronous remote copy feature that allows for snapshots to be taken between multiple sites (over LAN or WAN) for disaster recovery
Client Server Clustering Agent • Support for Microsoft* Cluster Server and Veritas* Cluster Server
• Allows Microsoft* and Veritas* clustered client servers access to shared SAN storage

SSM Clusters

Scalability Package allows multiple SANform M100 units to pool storage and connectivity resources. A cluster is a grouping of SSMs from which you create volumes and assign data replication levels. Clusters bring better performance and reliability to the IP SAN.

How Replication Works

4 Blocks of Data 4 Blocks of Data 4 Blocks of Data
Replication = 1 Replication = 2 Replication = 3

The order in which SSM's are added to the cluster determines the order in which copies of data are written to the volume.

Cross Unit Striping Scenario

Example:

  • 5 SSM Cluster Fully Meshed
  • Volume 1 is striped across 5 individual SSM's
  • Replication level = 2 (can be up to 3)
Benefits:
  • Load Balancing
  • 5 GigE connection points to Volume 1
  • Highly redundant, fault tolerant system
  • Enable spread of data over a dynamic number of spindles

Snapshots

Snapshots provide a fixed version of a volume for read-only access. The configurable Snapshot Package upgrade for the SANform M100 allows snapshots to be created automatically, and the physical size of a snapshot to be changed.

How a Snapshot Works

User_Data Volume composed of Disk Blocks A, B and C.
User_Data Volume composed of modified Disk Blocks.
New volume is created to hold any changed blocks
Previous volume becomes Snapshot volume, and is read only
All operations are transparent to the operating system and the user community. Snapshots happen instantaneously in time.

Snapshot – Layered Architecture

  • Volume/snapshot relationship can be conceptually thought of as "layers"
  • Space is allocated from the storage pool to accommodate snapshots
  • User_Data_ss1 is the baseline snapshot; the volume is read only
  • User_Data_ss2 contains the deltas since User_Data_ss1 was created
  • User_Data contains the deltas since User_Data_ss2 was created
  • The User_Data volume is comprised of User_Data + User_Data_ss2 + User_Data_ss1

Remote Data Protection Package

The Remote Data Protection Package upgrade for the SANform M100 allows for volumes to be copied to a remote SANform M100 unit over an IP network.

Remote Data Protection Example

  • Storage control console helps enable centralized data management
  • Cross-replication between sites supports operational failover
  • Ad hoc or scheduled replication
  • Incremental updates help to minimize bandwidth and telecom costs
  • Interrupted updates restart, rewrite previous 10%
