SILICON MECHANICS ANNOUNCES COREBOOT AVAILABILITY
BOTHELL, WA — April 18, 2008 — As the result of a cooperative development effort involving Silicon Mechanics, AMD, and Supermicro, on behalf of a leading university research laboratory, Silicon Mechanics will install coreboot on the Rackform nServ A236 with a specific set of hardware and software at customer request.
Formerly known as LinuxBIOS, coreboot is a Free Software project aimed at replacing the proprietary BIOS (firmware) you can find in most of today's computers. It performs a small amount of hardware initialization and then executes a software payload. The benefits of coreboot include rapid boot times, software payload execution, and the replacement of BIOS code with free, GPL, modifiable code.
The nServ A236 packs up to 2 Quad-Core AMD Opteron™ 2000 Series processors, 4 hot-swap SAS/SATA drives, 16 GB DDR2 memory, 2 integrated Gigabit Ethernet adapters, and 2 PCI expansion slots into a single rack unit. It is an excellent choice for high-performance computing. Silicon Mechanics will be offering coreboot pre-installation on the Rackform nServ A236 with a specific set of hardware and software.
