Features

  • VMware ESX is a "bare metal" hypervisor that partitions physical servers in multiple virtual machines. Each virtual machine represents a complete system, with processors, memory, networking, storage, and BIOS.
  • Multiple virtual machines can share physical resources — including the CPU, RAM, hard disk and network controller — and run side by side on the same server.
  • Operating systems and applications can run unmodified in virtual machines.
  • Multiple servers, storage infrastructure, and networks can be aggregated into shared pools of resources that can be delivered dynamically, securely, and reliably to applications as needed.
  • VMware ESX forms the foundation of the VMware Infrastructure 3 suite. VMware ESX is included in all VMware Infrastructure editions. Learn more about the features and benefits of VMware Infrastructure editions (PDF).

Benefits

  • Increase hardware utilization and reduce hardware requirements with server consolidation ratios commonly exceeding ten virtual machines per physical processor.
  • Reduce required datacenter square footage, rack space, power, cooling, cabling, storage, and network components by reducing the sheer number of physical machines.
  • Improve application availability and business continuity independent of hardware and operating systems.
  • Streamline software test and development by consolidating disparate development, testing, and staging environments with multiple operating systems on the same hardware.
  • Eliminate planned downtime for server and storage maintenance with live migration of virtual machines across physical servers and storage arrays.
  • Re-host legacy applications on new hardware for improved reliability.
