Bob Heyer, COO of Silicon Mechanics, Inc., competes with Team Type 1 and wins the 8-person Race Across America Corporate Challenge while shattering records.
BOTHELL, WA – June 18, 2007 – On June 18th Team Type 1 completed the Race Across America, reaching Atlantic City in first place overall and 11 hours before the second-place 8-person team. They set a new average speed record of 22.42 mph and a new race time record of 5 days 15 hours and 43 minutes.
Team Type 1 is a bicycle racing team composed of type-1 diabetics raising funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. TT1's long term goal is to help diabetics of all types gain better control of their diabetes through adopting a healthy lifestyle and proper glucose monitoring habits.
They faced extreme hot and cold temperatures, high winds, rain and thunderstorms in a demanding coast-to-coast route across 15 different state lines. The grueling route descends to 170 feet below sea level and 10,550 feet above seal level, encompassing high mountain passes in Colorado, the heat of the Arizona desert and culminates with 9% inclines in West Virginia and Maryland.
TT1 sailed across the country to become the First Place Finisher and 2007 Corporate RAAM Champions beating their time from last year. The story of eight young men and women with type-1 diabetes racing 3,060 miles across the U.S. to raise funds for Diabetes research touched everyone who heard about it.
